What this measures
The number of crimes recorded by the Police Service of Northern Ireland in each policing district in the financial year, as published in Table 9.1 of the annual recorded crime tables. The eleven policing districts share their boundaries with the eleven local government districts.
What this doesn’t measure
Crime that was not reported to or recorded by the police, crime in England, Wales or Scotland, or where the people involved live: a crime is counted where the incident happened.
Important caveat
Recorded crime in Northern Ireland is counted by the Police Service of Northern Ireland under the Home Office counting rules, but it is a separate series from the England and Wales figures and is never added to them. A recorded crime is one the police recorded, so a change can reflect reporting and recording as much as crime itself. Crimes are counted where the incident happened, not where anyone involved lives. Policing districts have had their present boundaries since the Review of Public Administration took effect in April 2015; the PSNI restates the district series back to 2001/02 on those boundaries and states that the earlier years cannot be placed in them, so there is no district figure before 2001/02. Rates per 1,000 are the PSNI's own, using NISRA mid-year population estimates. Fraud recorded by Action Fraud rather than by the PSNI is counted differently over the series; the workbook sets that out in Table 6.1.
