Your personal allowance is £12,570. That leaves £22,430 of taxable income.

What your employer pays on top

Employers pay National Insurance on your earnings as well. On £35,000 that is about £4,500 a year at 15% above £5,000, before any Employment Allowance the employer can claim. It never appears on your payslip, so the full cost of employing you is higher than your gross pay.

What this does not cover

Salary sacrifice, benefits in kind, the marriage allowance, blind person’s allowance, non-standard tax codes and National Insurance categories other than the standard one are not modelled. Getting those subtly wrong would be worse than leaving them out. The figures assume one employment, taxed under PAYE, for a full year.
