What this doesn’t measure
People present but not usually resident, short-term residents, the mid-year population estimates for 2021, or any later population change.
Important caveat
Census 2021 counts usual residents on Census Day, 21 March 2021, as published by the ONS through Nomis. Every figure is an exact published count, but the ONS applies statistical disclosure control (record swapping and cell-key perturbation) before publishing, so small counts are slightly altered and the same total can differ by a few people between tables. Categories are the census questionnaire's tick boxes and write-in groups, self-identified; the labels here are exactly as published. Local authorities are the April 2023 boundaries Nomis publishes on, recoded to the April 2025 codes for Barnsley and Sheffield (same areas, new codes).
