What this measures

The number of entry clearance (out-of-country) visas granted in the Study category, including short-term study (main applicants and dependants, Tier 4 and its pre-Points-Based-System equivalent), in a calendar year, from the Home Office's old-format table vi_04.

What this doesn’t measure

Students who extended their stay in the UK, or the years from 2014 in the modern Vis_01 table.

Important caveat

Entry clearance visas granted by category from the Home Office's old-format table vi_04 (last published May 2019), covering main applicants and dependants together. Categories were mapped by the Home Office from the pre-Points-Based-System endorsements to the Work, Study and Family groupings. Study includes short-term study. The modern Vis_01 table starts in 2014 and is derived from a different outcomes dataset; its 2014 figures differ from vi_04 by a handful of visas, so the two series are shown separately with a marked break.

The modern series (Vis_01, from 2014) is derived from the Vis_D02 outcomes dataset with the current route groupings; its 2014 study visa figure (293,648) equals the vi_04 figure.
