Breakdowns
What this measures
The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimate of the number of crimes experienced by people aged 16 and over and households in a 12-month period, including fraud and computer misuse.
People often confuse this with
What this doesn’t measure
Crimes against businesses, homicide, drug offences, crimes against people under 16, or crimes with no direct victim.
Important caveat
The Crime Survey for England and Wales asks a sample of households about their experience of crime in the previous 12 months. It is a survey estimate with a margin of error, covers people aged 16 and over living in households, and does not cover crimes against businesses, homicide, or crimes with no direct victim. The survey was suspended during the pandemic, so there are no estimates for the years ending March 2021 and March 2022.
