Adjusted by us with the ONS CPI all-items index: each published figure is multiplied by the ratio of the index in 2025 to the index in the month its own period ends, so everything is in 2025 prices. The published cash figures are on the other view. HM Treasury deflates public spending with the GDP deflator, not CPI, so official real-terms spending figures can differ.Published valueProvisional or revisedLatestShaded bands: governments (see labels)Hover or use arrow keys to read a value
DESNZ's estimate of the annual bill for a UK household using 11,200 kWh of gas at the average tariff across all payment methods, in cash terms.
What this doesn’t measure
What any household actually paid, or homes without mains gas, which are around 15% of the total.
Important caveat
These are modelled bills for a fixed amount of energy at the average tariff, not what households actually spent. They include the effect of the Energy Price Guarantee and the Ofgem cap where those applied, but not the Energy Bills Support Scheme payments made in 2022 and 2023. The gas series on this basis starts in 2022; earlier years used a different consumption assumption and are not comparable. Figures are in cash terms.
