Breakdowns
What this measures
The number of offences of murder, manslaughter and infanticide in England and Wales currently recorded as homicide on the Home Office Homicide Index, after cases have been reclassified following court outcomes or further investigation.
What this doesn’t measure
Offences initially recorded as homicide that were later reclassified, deaths by dangerous driving, corporate manslaughter, or homicides in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Important caveat
Homicide Index figures count offences currently recorded as homicide (murder, manslaughter and infanticide) as at a fixed date, after cases initially recorded as homicide have been reclassified following court decisions or further investigation. They are subject to revision as cases progress, are published about a year after the quarterly police recorded crime tables, and will not match the police-recorded homicide count for the same period. Calendar years are shown up to 1997 and years ending March from then on.
Revision history
No period of this series has been revised since it was first ingested here. Revisions are recorded automatically when a later release publishes a different figure for the same period.
